Stop Chasing the Year. Start Aligning the Quarter.
How high-performing leaders can find their Missing 1%—without doing more.
Annual plans sound great in theory. But in reality, they often collapse under the weight of complexity, shifting priorities, and sheer human exhaustion.
It’s not your fault. It’s the wrong frame.
Quarterly alignment planning gives you—and your team—a better rhythm. Three months is long enough to make real progress, and short enough to stay honest about what matters. Not just for the business, but for you. Because no matter how driven or mission-aligned you are, that missing 1%—the gap between success and fulfillment—can’t be closed by simply doing more.
It comes from aligning more clearly. And subtracting what no longer serves.
This is where the Lead in 3D framework comes in.
It helps high achievers and their teams direct their time, energy, and attention across the three essential leadership dimensions:
ME: Personal wellbeing and growth
WE: Team performance and relationships
WORLD: Broader impact on the communities you care about
Each quarter becomes a chance to realign—not just to goals, but to the kind of leader you want to be.
Here’s a simple three-step process to start.
Step 1: Notice Where Your Energy Goes
Awareness is always the first move. Use the Six Spheres of Impact—Self, Friends & Family, Job, Workplace, Community, and Money—to reflect on where your energy is flowing now.
No judgment. Just notice.
Which spheres are thriving? Which feel neglected? Where are you over-investing, and what might you be clinging to out of habit?
This first step reveals powerful patterns—and low-hanging fruit for subtraction.
Step 2: Clarify Your 3D Goals
Next, ask yourself: What outcomes really matter to me this quarter?
Frame your answers across the three dimensions:
ME: What supports your energy, growth, or joy?
WE: What does your team, family, or close community need from you?
WORLD: Where could you advance change beyond your immediate circles?
You don’t need to do more in each area—you just need to be clearer about what matters most in each one.
This is how high-performing leaders begin to reclaim their Missing 1%. By investing in all three dimensions, not just the familiar one.
Step 3: Align Your Investments
Here’s where transformation happens. Once you see where your time and energy are going—and what you want to move toward—you can start realigning.
This is the subtraction moment.
Drop what no longer serves your goals
Defer what doesn’t need attention right now
Delegate what others can do
Do what aligns with your 3D priorities
One move might check off multiple dimensions. For example, mentoring a colleague could deepen your WE connection, fuel your ME fulfillment, and even contribute to your WORLD legacy.
Choose just one Sphere of Impact to focus on this quarter. That’s all you need to start compounding returns.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just a personal exercise. It’s a leadership practice. When teams plan in 3D, they stop spinning. They get clear. They align.
Purposeful leadership isn’t about more effort. It’s about more alignment, with what’s real, what matters, and what sustains you.
