What Is the Missing 1%?
And why high-performing leaders can’t afford to ignore it.
You’ve climbed the ladder.
Checked the boxes.
Built a life to be proud of.
So why does it still feel like something’s missing?
That quiet whisper—the one that sneaks in between deadlines and achievements—is what I call The Missing 1%.
It’s the invisible gap between outer success and inner fulfillment.
It’s not a failure. It’s a signal. And if you’re hearing it, you’re not alone.
🎯 The Trap of “Doing More”
I spent years on the frontlines of global community development. Driven by service, grounded in values, and fully immersed in doing good. I also studied psychology and leadership at Harvard, Cambridge, Columbia, and London Business School. I was on a mission.
And like many purpose-driven leaders, I thought service required sacrifice.
That burning out meant burning bright.
That if I was exhausted, it was because I wasn’t doing enough.
But here’s the truth: whether you’ve chased impact, prestige, security—or all three—the result can be the same:
Disconnection.
Doubt.
And a creeping fear: What if I can’t keep this up? What if this isn’t it?
This is what happens when we lead in just one dimension—whether that’s self (ME), service (WORLD), or relationship (WE).
It looks successful. It even feels purposeful.
But it’s fragile. External. Unsustainable.
That’s what I now call 1D leadership: impressive from the outside, but misaligned at its core.
✨ From Burnout to Flow: A Better Way to Lead
Everything began to shift when I started leading in 3D—investing intentionally across:
ME: my wellbeing, learning, and energy
WE: my teams, family, and shared growth
WORLD: the broader causes and legacy I care about
That shift aligned with what neuroscience calls intrinsic motivation. In the terms of Dan Pink (based on Ryan and Deci’s earlier work):
Autonomy (I chose how I worked)
Mastery (I could improve and grow)
Purpose (I knew what it was all for)
And when those elements aligned, I found flow.
I felt clear. Energized. Fulfilled.
I was making an impact—without sacrificing myself.
It felt like having it all.
Until… I noticed the edges fraying again.
Still productive. Still in purpose. But strangely… flat.
The returns were no longer compounding. They were fading.
That was the second sign of the Missing 1%.
🐎 When the Answer Isn’t “More”—It’s “Aligned”
The final unlock came somewhere unexpected:
In the presence of horses.
Through my work in equine-assisted leadership development, I reconnected with something ancient—and urgently relevant today. The idea that true leadership doesn’t push harder. It aligns more deeply.
The horses helped reveal what I now teach as the Fulfillment Formula—a way to move beyond performance, beyond flow, and into sustainable fire.
It’s built on three core capacities:
🐎 Robust Presence – Showing up fully in your body, your boundaries, and your moment
🌱 Energy Conservation – Doing what only you can do, and letting go of the rest
🔥 Congruence – Aligning your actions with what you truly value
Together, these let us move from effort to ease, from hustle to harmony, from “not enough” to lit up.
And perhaps most importantly—they help us lead in a way that actually feels like us.
🔍 Ready to Find Your Missing 1%?
I created the 3D Alignment Index to help you begin that journey.
It’s a quick, research-based diagnostic to help you spot where your current energy and attention might be out of sync—and what to do about it.
Then explore your results. We’ll point out which dimension you might be underindexing on, so you can correct for your overinvestments and get aligned.
Too Much ME → Isolating Independence
Too Much WE → Over-functioning for Others
Too Much WORLD → From Missionary to Martyr
This isn’t a hustle space.
It’s a human one.
Every other week(ish), I’ll share reflections, tools, and true stories for leaders ready to lead with clarity—and have their all.
Because the missing 1%?
That’s often the part that matters most.
